Melasma, also known as chloasma, occurs when uneven patches of dark skin appear on the face. These tan or brown patches generally occur symmetrically around the forehead, cheeks, nose, or upper lip. The symmetry of melasma distinguishes it from other skin conditions that can cause skin darkening. Melasma is a common condition and is found more frequently in women. It can be due to sun damage or hormonal changes, such as menopause and pregnancy. Individuals with darker skin types are far more inclined to melasma than those with lighter complexions. How is Melasma Treated?

I first came to Laser Skin Surgery Center in Devon about two years ago after dealing with persistent bumps on my face that simply would not go away. Before coming here, I had seen another dermatologist in Philadelphia who diagnosed me with rosacea, but the treatment wasn’t resolving the problem.Then I saw Dr. Wang, and the difference in the level of care was immediate.He took his time examining my skin, looked at the affected areas under magnification, took a skin sample, and actually asked questions to figure out what was going on. He even asked where I worked. When I told him I worked for a school district and was around children, that information helped him determine that what I was dealing with was contagious warts—not rosacea.He treated the areas by freezing/zapping them, and I NEVER saw those spots again. After struggling with them for so long, that was incredible.Fast-forward two years, and I returned to the Devon office because I was experiencing intense, life-disrupting itching. Naturally, I asked for Dr. Wang because of how positive my first experience had been. I was told that he is primarily doing surgeries now and that I would need to see Dr. Stephanie.I’ll admit—I was hesitant! 😂 When you find a doctor who gets it right, you don't necessarily want to switch.But man, oh man... Dr. Stephanie has been 10/10 with me. She has not missed the mark with my skin AT ALL.She is patient, kind, funny, thorough, and extremely knowledgeable. Most importantly, I feel like she actually listens. She doesn't rush through the appointment or make you feel like you're just another patient on the schedule. She takes the time to understand what I'm experiencing, explains what she's seeing and what we're doing about it, and I leave feeling confident in the care I'm receiving.Between my original experience with Dr. Wang and the care I now receive from Dr. Stephanie, I have developed a tremendous amount of trust in this practice.
